Living in Redlands, I am deeply passionate about fostering a Compassionate Community where we can reclaim the skills and knowledge surrounding death, dying, grief, and loss that have diminished due to medicalisation and institutionalisation. Many individuals feel uncomfortable or uncertain about how to respond when faced with a life-limiting illness or when supporting someone who has one. We routinely plan for life events such as births, weddings, buying a home or car, and taking holidays, yet many do not prepare for dying and death—an event that impacts us all.
Unfortunately, many who have advanced illness or conditions do not receive end-of-life care that aligns with their personal choices or needs, leading to significant emotional strain, uninformed decision-making, and more complicated grieving for the individual and their family. This issue is compounded by the limited availability of end-of-life services and the pressures of a time-poor society, where individuals often juggle family, work, and other commitments (i.e. the “sandwich generation“).
If you are interested in enhancing your knowledge or that of your workforce in the areas of death and grief literacy and contributing to the building of a Compassionate Community in the Redlands (we began this initiative a few years ago, but need to re-energise it), please do not hesitate to reach out and contact me.
