Your Guide to Making Big Decisions

Decisions, decisions … It’s estimated that the average adult makes more than 30,000 decisions EVERY DAY; and for those of us in business, it’s probably even more!

No wonder many of us have experienced that feeling of overwhelm when faced with a major decision.

What is Decision Fatigue?

Investing in a business opportunity, buying a property, changing careers, hiring staff, making a significant personal decision – at times like these, the weight of “getting it right” can feel enormous!

In fact, psychologists have a term for it: decision fatigue.

When we are overloaded with information, conflicting opinions, and pressure, our brains can struggle to process everything clearly. Some people freeze completely and avoid making a decision at all. Others rush through the process just to relieve the stress.

Neither approach usually ends well.

The truth is, making good decisions is rarely about being the smartest person in the room. More often, it comes down to having clear information, seeking the right advice, and giving yourself enough space to think properly.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is trying to absorb too much complex information all at once. Dense reports, technical jargon, and conflicting recommendations can leave you with “analysis paralysis”!

Big Decisions without the Overwhelm

Over the years I’ve discovered a few practical principles that help remove the overwhelm from big decisions, whether in my personal or professional life:

  1. Ask yourself: what’s the worst-case scenario?

Often, fear grows larger in our minds than reality.

Take a step back and genuinely ask yourself: If this decision doesn’t work out, what happens next? In many cases, the outcome is inconvenient or disappointing – but not catastrophic.

This simple exercise can reduce anxiety and help you think more rationally instead of emotionally.

  1. Get the best advice possible

This might sound obvious, but many people seek advice from the wrong sources.

You wouldn’t ask an accountant to provide a building and pest inspection on the property you’re buying, or a doctor about how to optimise your website for AI and the search engines – so make sure you’re consulting professionals who genuinely specialise in the relevant field!

At the same time, choose experts who communicate well. Technical expertise is important, but so is the ability to explain risks, opportunities and next steps in a way that actually makes sense.

The right advice can save you a whole lot of money, stress and regret later on.

  1. Good decisions should create a win/win

The best long-term decisions usually benefit more than one party.

From negotiating a business arrangement, to choosing a supplier or making a major purchase – look for outcomes where everyone involved gains something positive.

Decisions built purely on pressure, fear, or “beating” someone else often create problems down the track.

  1. Understand your decision window

Not every decision needs to be made immediately.

Some opportunities genuinely are time-sensitive, while others only feel urgent because of external pressure. Ask yourself: Do I have two days, two weeks or two months? Then use that time wisely.

Rushed decisions often skip the due diligence stage – and that’s where mistakes happen. Sometimes slowing down is actually the smartest thing you can do.

  1. Don’t ignore your gut instinct

Logic matters. Research matters. Expert advice matters. But your instincts matter too!

Some nerves are completely normal when making a big decision. However, if something consistently feels wrong, despite all the facts lining up on paper, it’s worth paying attention to that feeling.

Likewise, when you feel a genuine sense of peace and clarity about a decision, that’s often important too.

At the end of the day, good decision-making isn’t about eliminating all risk – because that’s impossible!

It’s about gathering the right information, avoiding preventable mistakes and moving forward with confidence instead of panic.

And sometimes, the most valuable people in the process are the experts who can take something complex – and simply help you understand it clearly. Not sure where to find them? You’ll find plenty of local businesses with expertise across a wide assortment of areas in the Business Directory right here on this website!
